BFPUG - Patterns first meeting April 5th

Friday, March 31st, 2006

When BFPUG was started we had also hoped to start up a Design Patterns sub group that would get together and talk about patterns monthly. Well now that BFPUG is off to a great start the sub group “Patterns” is going to have its first meeting April 5th, 7pm at Brightcove. This group will be more of a round table discussion rather than having one presenter talk. Brightcove has also offered to buy us pizza and drinks for the meeting. Thank you Brightcove and come join us for the first meeting!

April Meeting Subject

Monday, March 27th, 2006

The next BFPUG meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, 2006, 7:00 p.m. Location is the same: New England Institute of Art (directions on the side).

This meeting we have Chris Allen speaking about Red5. As many of you may not be particularly aware of this project, here a brief description:

Red5 is a Spring based Java implementation of an RTMP and AMF server for Adobe Flash clients. It offers the ability to stream audio and video, integrate with existing software systems and act as a one stop shop for all Flash server-side needs. Chris will be doing a demo of the server as well as answering many of the deeper questions about the road map the Red5 team has laid out and the underlying technologies used to create Red5.

In other words, it is an open source server that does many - if not all - of the same things that the Flash Media Server (formerly known as the Flash Communication Server) does.

The Flash open source community is a swiftly growing and very exciting movement, which has resulted in many high quality, free and open source tools to use in Flash design and development. To find out more about Open Source Flash, visit http://www.osflash.org/.

Looks like it starts a few minutes into my speech, but not much. Enjoy!

March Meeting Report

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

Just got home from tonight’s meeting. Sam Robbins and I (Keith Peters) gave a talk about ActionScript 3.0. Shortly beforehand, we got together and reviewed our notes and I was bit worried that we’d have enough material to go a full hour with. But as it turned out, we went almost a full two hours. I only saw one or two people sneak out the back door near the end, and there were tons of questions. So, per that and the comments I got after the talk, it went over pretty well.

As I mentioned, there was film crew videoing the whole presentation. It was broadcast live, sort of. There were some technical glitches and apparently the feed kept going down. Hopefully that won’t be an issue next month. At any rate, the recorded video will be on line some time tomorrow. I’ll post a URL as soon as I get it.

Each month’s presentation will be recorded, broadcast and archived in the same way, so we’ll soon have a pretty cool library of videos on line. I think that’s very cool.

March Meeting: ActionScript 3.0

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

The March meeting will be on the 22nd, 7:00 p.m., again at the New England Institute of Art.

The presentation will be on ActionScript 3.0, presented by Sam Robbins and Keith Peters.

AS 3 has some amazing new features, but can be a bit scary to newcomers. This presentation will cover the basics, including new features, changes, and how to get started. We’ll try to make a potentially heavy subject very light and easy, and leave plenty of time for questions.
